Check Writer helps you fill in and print checks and keep a check register. This policy says exactly what happens to the information you type into it.
What stays on your phone
Everything you enter stays on your phone:
- Bank details - account holder name and address, bank name and address, routing number, account number, check style, and your optional logo and signature image. These are encrypted on the device with AES-256 under a key held in Android Keystore, which never leaves the phone. They are never transmitted.
- The check register - check numbers, payees and their addresses, amounts, dates, memos and status.
- Payees, printer calibration offsets and app settings.
We have no servers, no accounts and no sign-in. We never receive any of this information and cannot see, recover or delete it for you.
What the app does not do
- It does not connect to your bank, make payments, send ACH or e-checks, or deposit checks.
- It contains no advertising and no analytics or crash-reporting SDK.
- It has no code of its own that uses the network.
- It asks for no runtime permissions. Its only install-time permissions are for fingerprint or face unlock of the app lock (USE_BIOMETRIC) and those added by Google Play Billing (see below). Images are chosen through the Android Photo Picker, and files you export are saved where you choose through the system file picker.
Google Play Billing
The optional one-time Pro purchase is processed by Google Play. We do not receive your payment details. Google's Play Billing library, which the app must include to sell Pro, sends Google diagnostic logs about billing calls (for example, whether a connection to the Play Store succeeded). This is handled under Google's privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy); it contains nothing you typed into the app. This is why the app's Play listing declares "App info and performance: Diagnostics". The library is also why the installed app carries the INTERNET permission.
Backups and exports
- Android Auto Backup is switched off. Your data is not copied to Google Drive or to a new phone.
- Encrypted backup (optional): a file encrypted with a passphrase you choose, saved where you choose. Without the passphrase it cannot be read, by us or anyone. A lost passphrase cannot be recovered.
- Export all my data and CSV export write readable files where you choose; account numbers in them are masked to the last four digits.
Security
Once a bank account is saved, the app locks with your phone's fingerprint, face or screen lock. Screens showing a full account number block screenshots and screen recording.
Deleting your data
Settings > Delete all data erases every account, check, payee, image and setting and destroys the encryption key. Uninstalling the app also removes everything.
Children
The app is for adults (18+) managing their own bank accounts. It is not directed at children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
